Description:
The Quaich was a wedding present for my sister and her partner. I have been an occasional carver for about 10 years and this is my first 'bowl'. I designed the Quaich from looking at pictures and adapting to the piece of oak blank I purchased for the project. I followed the techniques holding methods and tools Shown in Chris's video workshop on the 'frog bowl' adapting it to the tools I already had in my possession. The video gave me confidence in the method and I did 'feel the form' as I shaped the outside of the bowl. The main gouges were 9/20mm, 9/10mm, 13/12mm, 5/20mm and 6/22mm. I made scrapers from old combination plane blades and these gave a great finish. To finish the Quaich I recessed a 2016 Silver Sixpence in the base for luck. Oak is hard!!
