American Kestrel

Project Owner: Brian Hedrick
Type of Wood: Basswood

Dimensions: Approx. 13" W x 15" L

Description:

The American Kestrel is one of my favorite birds of prey. As a relatively new carver, I did not feel quite ready to take on a fully in-the-round carving of this bird, so I decided to do it in relief, and I hope that later on I will have a chance to carve a kestrel free from a background. (Looking back, it probably would have been a little bit easier to carve it fully in the round, because of all the small crevices that were formed because of the background.) This project took about 2-and-a-half months (during the summer), and about 180 hours in all. I had a lot of fun carving this kestrel and applying the things taught on this site. Thank you, Mr. Pye!
