I actually started these carvings before Chris introduced his Hepworth projects. I have always aspired to make work that focuses on the integrity and simplicity of the outside form, the beauty of the wood and how thinking about shadows can be integral to the creation of a satisfying sculpture. The wood, though beautiful and deceptively easy to carve as it’s relatively soft, was a challenge as the grain direction changes constantly.
