Description:
Hello, fellow carvers. This is a follow-up for my “Samurai Hornets” Piece, previously posted in the Ornamental Carving section of the gallery. These pictures show the stages for carving and assembling the piece. It involved both carving and turning and taxed my engineering skills. First, this is the piece before coloring. It was, of necessity, made from three different species of wood. The bowl and the base are all made of cherry. The lid for the turned bowl is maple and the carved hornet finial is basswood. If I’d have been thinking ahead, I’d have bought enough of the cherry to start with. I like the wood effect of the plain wood, but the coloring was necessary to minimize the different natural colors of the three woods. The view of the pieces during the making shows that some of the pieces are turned and some are carved. And also the scale of the piece. And, the third picture shows how I used my palm router to freehand in the three levels of the swarming hornets motif before I got busy with my gouges.
