Before we get to the actual low relief carving, I want to take you through the various stages and break them down a bit. This way we get to see how the tools work.
'Lining in' is the carvers term for outlining a design. We'll look at the reasons for doing this and the best way to handle the wood grain.
You'll notice I am using 'good' wood - wood that seems to help me carve, rather than create problems. I can't overemphasise that you'll find your carving easier and more enjoyable if you aim for this too, even if you have to buy it specially, rather than use whatever you happen to get hold of.
