Important Principles. If you look around at the projects on Woodcarving Workshops you'll see that I don't stain my carvings very often and, when I do, the staining is usually quite selective. However, I do understand some important principles of staining and in this lesson I want to share with you perhaps the most important.
The golden rule of staining is...? Correct! Always test on a comparable piece of wood first. And that means a carved surface as well as the species. Stains are easy to apply but only re-carving will get them off.
