We 'finish' to protect and enhance the carving.
There are other options to what I show here: shellac and wax. You could try an acrylic varnish (artists' suppliers) instead of the shellac; or a just a mix of raw linseed oil with 10% turpentine, wiped on. It would be worth experimenting with a scrap of similar wood before committing your finish to the carving.
