I initially thought of this as a beginner's project, and it still is but probably not after the point where I cut in the bottom edge of the drapery to reveal the post; it gets a little tricky then.
The whole thing is a great exercise as we go through it step by step, big picture to the small details, and worth taking on whatever your level of carving. Remember, it's just a piece of wood! You can always have another attempt, learning such a lot as you go along.
You can use the draped 'plinth' for all sorts of things besides a candle: bud vases to little sculptures and of course the size can be anything you like.
