We have to 'stylise' the wings: moth and butterfly wings are flat and usually brightly colour but we only have our wood, figured though that may be. So we have give them a presence, a sense of movement within the form.

Ah, the comment on "weak grain" and "strengthening it". I never would have shaped that concept in my head, but it makes perfect sense. Another thing to plan when designing my project and laying it out.

Thanks, Chris. I'm applying the moth within a relief carving setting and it's actually the first time I've worked directly following your video on my iPad as I carve. It seems "obvious" but in truth it's a great approach to making the eyes and hands start feeling the "obvious"!
