Here, I use the working drawing to cut out the basic shape of the bat, so saving a lot of time - and make a decision about holding it.
To begin with, I use a 'Stretton Carvers Arm' , extending the plate with a wooden add-on. I've been looking online and I'm afraid that this holding device doesn't seem available any more. Later I'll switch to a more direct method of holding. It's important to have a repertoire here so you can get at your carving easily and safely.
