In this lesson I move from 'carving' to 'shaping'. In other words moving from carving tools to rasps and scrapers. I'd normally finish the surface of a soft material with flat gouges because sanding a surface very smooth tends to make it shiny and hard looking. In this case, however, the only way of really bringing out the figure in the wood is by making the surface really smooth and I think I get away with it because ties are often a bit shiny.
