Lowering and levelling the background is not something to be got through as quickly as possible in order to start carving the subject; it needs to be done carefully and right, especialy on a curved surface like this.
Finish cleanly and make sure the ground seem to pass uniformly beneath the subject as one continuous plane. It's a illusion of course - the page - but one we want to create.
