At last we get into some 'real' carving!
Here's the thing: In a low relief, especially a complicated one, it's normal for the background work, up to setting in, to take longer than the carving/modelling of the subject. And when you take into account that the designing and drawing-out can take longer than all the carving put together...
So, yes, carving is a laborious, painstaking process in some ways and suits certain temperaments better thn others. It's also why, when you look at the whole range of woodworking crafts, carvers working at our level are special, and a small minority.
