Bosting and Accurate Setting in

Bosting is the carvers term for sketching in the subject (the word originally comes from ébaucher,  French for ' to sketch out'): getting the underlying forms in place with their relationships, whatever the carving, relief or in the round.

On these forms the modelling and details will sit, so you can see this stage is very important in the carving process.

Once we have removed a lot of wood, making full use of the depth, we can set in the edges accurately - but only down 1/8in. (3mm). Why? Again, it's about efficiency. We'll be undercutting around the edges so there is no point doing work that we'll have to undo later.

And that waste around the butterfly? Leave it alone!
