Because of the compressed perspective, the best way I find to draw the helix is by eye - it's right if it looks right.
Get the overall shape and then draw in your helix, looking at the shell from the correct point of view: dead in front. Use a soft pencil and eraser and keep tuning the line until it 'works'. In this lesson, you'll see the interesting way the sweeps (curvatures) of gouges can add up to form an neat spiral.
