Nicolas - If you cup your hand you'll find a natural hollow between the ends of your fingers and the base of the thumb. The very end on the handle nestles somewhere in there. More up into that big thumb muscle than the soft palm but it varies between carvers (and hands!). So, yes, the palm is pushing the handle; you're not just gripping it.

When you push with your rear hand, is the back of the chisel touching your palm? Should the chisel touch or rest on your palm as you push?
